“Asda Struggles With Sales Decline Despite Turnaround Efforts”

Must read

Asda, a major supermarket chain, faced a significant challenge as it reported a 7% decline in sales. NielsenIQ (NIQ) experts also noted a decrease in Asda’s market share from 12.2% to 10.9% over the last three months.

Following its acquisition by billionaire brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa and TDR Capital in 2021, Asda has been striving to overcome its difficulties. Under TDR’s control, Asda appointed veteran chief Allan Leighton as executive chairman to lead a revival effort. Leighton, known for his successful turnaround strategies in the 1990s, was brought in to steer Asda back to profitability.

Despite announcing extensive price reductions earlier in the year to boost sales, Asda experienced a sharp drop in revenue. The supermarket chain aimed to be 5% to 10% cheaper than its competitors Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons by leveraging a “war chest” for increased discounting.

However, recent data from NIQ showed that Asda was the only major supermarket to witness a year-on-year sales decline in the quarter ending November. In contrast, Tesco saw a 4.5% sales increase, Sainsbury’s grew by 5.2%, and discount retailer Aldi posed a competitive threat with a market share of 10.3%.

An Asda spokesperson expressed confidence in the company’s turnaround strategy, highlighting improvements in availability both online and in-store, as well as a focus on offering better value compared to rivals. Asda aims to reestablish itself as the UK’s most affordable traditional supermarket.

In a bid to attract more customers, Asda launched a Christmas advertising campaign featuring The Grinch. The move coincided with NIQ’s projection that UK households would spend a total of £20 billion on Christmas groceries this year, with a peak of £5.7 billion expected next week.

NielsenIQ’s Mike Watkins emphasized that consumers are seeking cost-effective options this festive season. Many are prioritizing savings on everyday purchases to afford special treats and indulgences for their families in December.
