Eight ambulances were dispatched to a correctional facility after a group of inmates suddenly fell ill the previous day. Medical personnel responded to HMP Rochester, a Young Offenders Institution in Kent catering to individuals over 18 years old, following an emergency call by prison guards. The affected prisoners received treatment on-site, and an inquiry into the incident has been initiated.
According to a prison service representative, a cluster of inmates became unwell due to an incident at HMP Rochester on January 22. Immediate medical assistance was provided on the premises, and an ongoing investigation is underway, with no further comments deemed appropriate at this stage.
An eyewitness recounted to KentOnline that several men were becoming sick rapidly, and eight ambulances were deployed to the prison. This development coincides with authorities’ promises to enhance safety measures and reduce violence and self-harm within the facility after a tumultuous period marked by challenges such as vermin infestations, poor infrastructure, and pervasive illicit drug usage, as highlighted by inspectors.
In a report issued during the summer, it was noted that the peak of violence occurred in August 2024, with 29 incidents reported, but the numbers have since decreased to 12 incidents by March 2025. A spokesperson for IMB Rochester acknowledged the exceptional difficulties faced by HMP Rochester during the reporting year, emphasizing progress made through the dedication of all staff while acknowledging the need for further improvement.
The Ministry of Justice spokesperson expressed satisfaction with the strides made in enhancing safety at HMP Rochester, specifically in mitigating violence and self-harm concerns. Recognizing the necessity for continued efforts to curb drug availability, initiatives have been implemented to disrupt drug supply chains, including the installation of an upgraded CCTV system and new cell windows to prevent drug infiltration.
