Police have verified the passing of a 28-year-old man while in custody earlier this month.
The individual was apprehended by law enforcement officers from Devon and Cornwall Police in Torquay on January 15. Authorities stated that he fell ill while detained at Torquay Custody Centre and received urgent medical attention before being transported to Torbay District Hospital via ambulance.
Subsequently, he was officially declared deceased. The police have notified the man’s relatives, and a “mandatory referral” has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in response to the incident.
In a released statement, law enforcement mentioned, “Devon & Cornwall Police has initiated a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in light of the demise of a 28-year-old man in Torquay on Thursday, January 15.
“The individual was detained in Torquay in the early hours of January 15 and was taken to Torquay Custody Centre. He fell ill while in custody and received immediate medical attention before being transferred to Torbay District Hospital by ambulance. Unfortunately, he was later pronounced dead.
“The man’s next-of-kin have been notified. The police force has made a mandatory referral and is fully cooperating with an independent IOPC investigation.”
