“Team Up Campaign Tackles Men’s Mental Health Crisis”

Must read

Leading sports organizations, including the Premier League, are joining forces to enhance men’s mental well-being. The Government is spearheading a new initiative aimed at addressing the crisis of male loneliness, fostering social connections, and raising awareness about mental health support for men. Statistics show that in England, one in four boys and young men aged 11-16 experience feelings of loneliness, with suicide ranking as a major cause of death among men under 50.

The government’s initiative, named Team Up, will kick off with a week-long campaign scheduled to run from January 26 to February 1, 2026, across the UK. Concerns are mounting among ministers that without positive environments, young men are at risk of isolation, poor mental health, and negative online influences.

The Premier League, EFL, Rugby Football Union, England & Wales Cricket Board, and Movember are all anticipated to lend their support to the campaign. Prior to the campaign launch, the Government is urging elite clubs, grassroots teams, professional athletes, amateurs, and fans to participate.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy expressed, “Too many boys and young men in this country are facing challenges. They lack appropriate places and individuals to confide in for the help and support they require. Many are also being drawn into harmful online spaces, exposed to content reinforcing harmful notions of masculinity.”

She added, “Sport has a unique ability to address these issues and create a meaningful impact. It can assist young men in establishing positive connections, fostering camaraderie, confidence, and self-assurance. The ‘Team Up’ campaign will communicate the simple message that everyone deserves a support system and should be empowered to overcome life’s obstacles.”

Through the National Youth Strategy, the Government is allocating £500 million to develop up to 250 new or renovated youth facilities. Tracy Herd, Director of Men’s Health (Europe) at Movember, stated, “We are thrilled to support Team Up Week and collaborate with DCMS and sports partners to emphasize the role of physical activity in bolstering young men’s mental well-being.”
