Top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the upcoming U.S. Open due to an ongoing right knee injury sustained after his Wimbledon victory. Despite winning his second consecutive title at the All England Club by defeating Alexander Zverev, Sinner had to skip the Montreal and Cincinnati tournaments to prepare for the U.S. Open.
In a statement released on Friday, the 25-year-old Italian confirmed his withdrawal from the tournament, citing the need for more time to recover from his knee issue. Sinner expressed his disappointment at missing the event, as he has a special connection with New York and was eager to compete in front of the enthusiastic fans.
Sinner, the 2024 U.S. Open champion, was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s final. Alcaraz, who has been recovering from a right wrist injury since April, confirmed his readiness to participate in this year’s U.S. Open. The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been a highlight in men’s tennis, with the two facing off in the last three Grand Slam finals in 2025, culminating in Alcaraz’s victory at the most recent event in New York.
Having secured six titles and a record of 44-3 this year, Sinner suffered a setback at the French Open before his Wimbledon triumph. This marks the first time Sinner will miss a Grand Slam tournament since his debut at the U.S. Open in 2019.
