A tragic incident unfolded when a young man’s life was unexpectedly ended following a botched beard transplant in Turkey by an estate agent posing as a surgeon. Mathieu Vigier Latour traveled to Istanbul in March last year for what he believed was a legitimate €1,300 (£1,130) procedure, reassured by the clinic’s official stamp of approval from the Turkish health ministry.
Had he undergone the same procedure in France, the student would have paid significantly more. However, the seemingly cost-effective and swift fix turned into a nightmare for the 24-year-old. During the operation, 4,000 grafts were extracted from Mathieu’s scalp and transplanted to his face, but the surgeon inexplicably lost 1,000 grafts.
The aftermath was a patchy, unruly beard that was described as unmanageable, uneven, and with hairs growing at odd angles. Mathieu experienced burns and sleeplessness due to the pain. Upon investigating, he uncovered that the supposed surgeon was actually an estate agent.
His family desperately sought a specialist in Belgium to rectify the damage, but it was too late, with an expert confirming that parts of Mathieu’s scalp where the grafts were taken would never recover. The psychological toll was immense, leading Mathieu to suffer from post-traumatic shock and severe body dysmorphic disorder, fixating on perceived flaws in his appearance.
Tragically, he spiraled into a cycle he couldn’t break free from, culminating in his untimely death by suicide in his Paris student residence just three months post the botched operation. His father spoke out to raise awareness about the dangers of cheap medical tourism, hoping that sharing their story could prevent similar tragedies.
In another heartbreaking incident related to hair transplants in Turkey, a 36-year-old Brit named Mentor Rama traveled to Istanbul for a hair and teeth procedure. However, he fell ill upon returning to his hotel room post-operation, leading to his death despite prompt medical attention. Authorities were informed, and support was extended to Mentor’s family by the relevant authorities.
A poignant message shared on a family member’s public Facebook page expressed deep sorrow over Mentor’s passing. The heartfelt tribute highlighted the irreplaceable void left by his departure and the profound impact he had on his loved ones.
