The importance of broadband in our daily lives cannot be overstated. It serves various purposes such as streaming entertainment, facilitating remote work, enhancing home security through internet-connected cameras, and managing smart devices like lighting and heating.
As the demand for fast and reliable internet access grows due to the increasing use of internet-connected devices and online content streaming, not all internet service providers (ISPs) deliver the same level of performance.
According to SpeedGo, a new broadband speed-testing service, Virgin Media leads the UK in average download speeds, boasting an impressive 256.5Mbps. This speed enables users to download a full HD movie in slightly over two minutes, more than three times faster than the national average.
Following Virgin Media, Vodafone ranks second with average download speeds of 175Mbps, while BT (EE) takes the third spot. In contrast, TalkTalk falls to the bottom of the list with an average speed of just under 95Mbps.
Here are the average download speeds of some prominent ISPs in the UK:
– Virgin Media: 256.5Mbps
– Vodafone: 175.1Mbps
– BT (EE): 122.5Mbps
– Sky Broadband: 113.6Mbps
– TalkTalk: 94.7Mbps
In addition to download speeds, upload speeds are crucial for users handling large files or working remotely. Vodafone excels in this aspect with an average upload speed of 83.6Mbps, surpassing Virgin Media, which secures the second position with 47.2Mbps.
SpeedGo affirmed these results, stating that in 2025, Virgin Media provided the fastest broadband internet in the United Kingdom with an average download speed of 256.5Mbps, while Vodafone delivered the highest average upload speed at 83.6Mbps.
