“Beware: Street Parking Rules Could Lead to Fines”

Must read

Drivers who struggle to find parking spots often resort to street parking, assuming it’s legal as long as there are no double yellow lines. However, many are unaware of a lesser-known regulation that could result in a parking fine.

While double parking is commonly thought of as obstructing another vehicle by parking beside or behind it, the rules also encompass vehicles parked along the edge of the road.

According to The Highway Code, vehicles must not be left in a position that endangers others or causes unnecessary road blockage. It is crucial that vehicles are parked close to the kerb, within 50cm precisely. Failure to comply may lead to a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

For reference, 50cm is approximately the width of a wheelie bin lid, as reported by Leicestershire Live. The exception is when a vehicle is entirely within a designated parking bay.

When parking outside a bay, make sure your vehicle remains within the marked boundaries. Some drivers opt to park on the pavement, which can also result in penalties.

Though pavement parking is not illegal in all areas, obstructing pathways can still lead to PCNs. While there is discussion about banning pavement parking across England, no specific timeline has been set, and regulations vary by region.

PCN fines range between £50-80 and can be reduced by half if paid promptly. Failure to settle the fine promptly may result in additional charges after 30 days.

Ignoring a PCN may escalate to legal action, potentially increasing the penalties significantly. It is a common cause of County Court Judgments (CCJs), impacting credit scores negatively.
