“Godzilla El Niño Returns: Global Weather Chaos Ahead”

A significant Pacific Ocean warming event, known as “super” El Niño or “Godzilla” El Niño, is making a strong comeback, affecting global weather patterns while the world faces extreme heat. North America and Europe experienced record-breaking heat in July, leading to numerous heat-related fatalities, dried-up waterways, and extensive wildfires, notably in Canada with over 4.1 million hectares of forest burned.

Despite the correlation between this scorching summer and the reemergence of El Niño, climate experts suggest that the natural phenomenon is not solely responsible for these extreme weather events. However, they warn that the combination of El Niño and human-induced climate change could intensify the already severe weather conditions.

NASA’s climate scientist, Josh Willis, anticipates widespread and substantial impacts from the current El Niño event. The phenomenon, occurring every three to seven years, disrupts weather patterns by warming the Pacific waters and altering atmospheric conditions, leading to contrasting weather patterns in different regions.

Muhammad Azhar Ehsan from Columbia University’s Center for Climate Systems Research highlights the unprecedented nature of this El Niño, potentially rivaling the strongest events on record. The warming world due to climate change is expected to prolong the effects of this El Niño well into 2027, with implications for global weather patterns and extreme events.

The El Niño event is already affecting various regions, with Peru and Ecuador facing heavy rains and flooding, while Indonesia experiences an extended wildfire season. The Atlantic hurricane season is also being impacted, with fewer storms due to El Niño’s influence on the jet stream. This El Niño event is set to have long-lasting consequences, reshaping weather patterns and exacerbating climate-related disasters worldwide.
