Mark Critch is gearing up for the conclusion of “Son of a Critch” and assures fans that the final episode will be a memorable send-off. Speaking to CBC News, Critch expressed satisfaction with the series’ ending, highlighting it as a favorite part of the entire show.
The popular CBC comedy is making a comeback with its fifth and ultimate season on September 8, marking the last chapter set in Newfoundland. Inspired by Critch’s bestselling memoir, the show, nominated eight times for CSA awards, chronicles his experiences navigating the tumultuous ’80s in St. John’s.
Although the series draws from his past recollections, Critch, who portrays his father in the show, emphasized the new memories created with the cast, which he will cherish indefinitely.
In the upcoming season, viewers will witness Mark’s final year of high school coinciding with Newfoundland’s cod moratorium, leading to upheaval in his life as he manages first love, evolving friendships, family conflicts, and pursues his aspiration of becoming an actor.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, known for his role as young Critch, reflected on the substantial journey of portraying the character for almost a third of his life. Ainsworth’s recent projects include featuring in HBO’s “House of the Dragon” season three and an upcoming role as Link in the live-action adaptation of “The Legend of Zelda.”
The cast members also shared sentiments of closure as the series concludes, likening it to bidding farewell to a long-standing tradition. Claire Rankin, portraying Mary, Critch’s mother, compared the experience to outgrowing summer camp but emphasized the enduring friendships and cherished memories forged during the show.
Rankin found a deeper connection to her character upon hearing anecdotes from locals who knew the real-life inspiration for Mary, Mark’s mother, providing her with valuable insights and enriching her portrayal on the screen.
Veteran actor Malcolm McDowell, known for iconic roles in films like “A Clockwork Orange” and “Star Trek: Generations,” shared his delight in portraying Critch’s grandfather, labeling it as one of the most cherished experiences in his extensive career.
McDowell commended Critch’s writing prowess, placing him among the top-tier writers he has collaborated with and expressed admiration for the show’s conclusion. “Son of a Critch” fans can catch the fifth and final season premiere on CBC and CBC Gem starting September 8.
