Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated that the current Saudi Pro League season could mark the conclusion of his illustrious career in professional football. The 41-year-old football icon’s contract with Al-Nassr, a club based in Riyadh, is set to expire in June next year, and he has expressed doubts about signing another contract.
“This is likely my final year in football, and I aim to depart with a remarkable legacy,” stated Ronaldo in an interview with Vogue magazine. With a remarkable record of 976 career goals, the Portuguese forward recently tied the knot with his long-time partner, Georgina Rodriguez.
“I have my future plans all set,” Ronaldo revealed. “I have numerous interests to pursue, as relying solely on football could create a void. It’s crucial to engage in various activities to fill that void and ensure a fulfilling post-football life.”
The ongoing 2026-27 SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year as a professional player. Throughout his career, he has clinched five Ballon d’Or accolades and secured five UEFA Champions League titles. Ronaldo’s exceptional performance last season, where he scored 28 league goals, propelled Al-Nassr to clinch the Saudi Arabian championship in May, marking his first title win since joining the club and the first league victory for Al-Nassr since 2019.
Following his recent wedding, Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s opening game of the season, a 3-0 victory over Al-Fateh, as he watched from the sidelines. Coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledged Ronaldo’s absence, stating, “Cristiano is here with us today and remains a constant presence.” Ronaldo is anticipated to feature in the upcoming King’s Cup match against Al-Diriyah on Tuesday.
Ronaldo’s statements come in the wake of Lionel Messi, his longtime rival, hinting at a potential retirement following the passing of his father. Messi, aged 39, expressed uncertainty about his future in football, remarking, “I used to solely focus on playing football, but now I am unsure about continuing for much longer.”
