Three months following a distressing car fire incident, Jason Pelletier remains in anticipation of answers and potential further compensation from Hyundai, the automobile manufacturer.
On a typical morning commute to work on June 9, the school principal found himself driving his Santa Fe on a busy Toronto highway when the vehicle suddenly caught fire. Witnessing thick black smoke and flames emanating from the hood, Pelletier faced a situation where the engine and brakes failed to respond as expected.
Struggling to navigate through traffic on the 401 highway, Pelletier managed to escape the vehicle just in time before an explosion occurred, blowing up the front end of the car. What adds to his unease is the fact that he had recently taken the SUV to the dealership for a head gasket replacement, a crucial seal preventing coolant and oil mixing.
Noticing a burning odor post-dealership visit, Pelletier sought reassurance from the service manager, who attributed it to post-service residue. Despite raising concerns about light smoke from the hood, the service manager did not respond before the engine burst into flames the next day.
Hyundai Canada, in response to the incident, emphasized safety as its primary concern while refraining from further comments pending a review of the circumstances surrounding the vehicle fire. Nitish Bissonauth, the senior manager of corporate communications, highlighted the ongoing investigation into the matter.
Following the car fire, a message on the vehicle’s touchscreen warned of a potential engine issue, prompting Pelletier to reach out to the service manager, who failed to respond before the fire outbreak. Despite the insurer compensating Pelletier for the car’s value and rental expenses, he estimates significant personal losses, including belongings and items essential to his professional pursuits during Pride Month.
With his Santa Fe undergoing forensic analysis in Oshawa, Pelletier expressed concerns over the prolonged investigation and the possibility of additional recalls that could have prevented the incident. Disenchanted by the experience, he has opted to switch to a different SUV brand, expressing reluctance towards driving a Hyundai in the future despite being a former fan.
