Ben McKenzie, known for his role as Ryan Atwood in the popular teen drama “The O.C.,” has shifted his focus to cryptocurrency, dubbing it “the largest Ponzi scheme in history.” According to McKenzie, cryptocurrency often benefits a select few insiders who make substantial profits while leaving the majority of regular investors at a loss. His exploration of the industry is showcased in his latest documentary, “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money,” which premiered in limited theaters in April.
Initially drawn to cryptocurrency by a friend’s investment suggestion, McKenzie, a holder of an economics degree, delved deeper into the industry and was struck by what he perceived as its lack of substance. In 2022, he testified at a U.S. Senate committee hearing on cryptocurrency and co-authored a book titled “Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud.”
While some criticize McKenzie’s documentary for sensationalizing negative narratives surrounding cryptocurrency, McKenzie emphasizes the need for increased regulation to safeguard investors. In an interview with guest host Lyndsay Duncombe on “The Current,” McKenzie elucidated on why he believes cryptocurrency poses particular risks for men, highlighting its allure of immense wealth with minimal effort and private ownership outside governmental reach.
Despite tales of individuals amassing wealth through cryptocurrency, McKenzie underscores a prevalent pattern where a few insiders profit significantly while many investors suffer losses due to potential price manipulation and fraudulent practices. Notably, McKenzie points to instances like the “Trump coin” meme coin, where the former president’s family reportedly gained $1.4 billion, while investors lost over $3 billion.
McKenzie’s documentary portrays the struggles of investors who, despite significant losses, continue to place faith in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, succumbing to the sunk-cost fallacy. McKenzie laments the societal failures that lead individuals to gamble on such speculative ventures and emphasizes that while traditional financial systems may have flaws, cryptocurrency presents an even riskier alternative.
In essence, McKenzie advocates for a critical evaluation of cryptocurrency’s claims to provide a better financial system, cautioning that despite its criticisms of the current financial landscape, cryptocurrency may not offer a superior solution.
