France’s navy, supported by British intelligence, has successfully intercepted a sanctioned oil tanker suspected of operating under a false flag. The vessel, named the Grinch, was halted in the Mediterranean following collaborative efforts between French and British maritime authorities.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the interception, stating that the operation was conducted in adherence to international sanctions. The tanker, allegedly from Russia, is under investigation, and strict measures are being taken to ensure compliance with international maritime laws.
The French navy has brought the ship to port for further inspection. The vessel’s seizure is part of a broader crackdown on illicit oil tankers, with over 400 ships believed to be part of the sanction-evading “shadow fleet.” Efforts are underway to strengthen enforcement and establish agreements with flag-carrying nations to facilitate the boarding of suspicious vessels.
The intercepted tanker, flying a false flag from the Comoros Islands with an Indian crew, was stopped off the coast of Almeria, Spain. British Armed Forces have expressed readiness to assist in similar operations against Russian vessels involved in sanction violations.
Recent actions by British forces, including aiding a US operation against the Marinera, highlight the international community’s resolve to combat illicit maritime activities. Calls for a complete ban on Russian oil shipments aim to tighten control over Kremlin-linked operations and safeguard against environmental risks posed by rogue tankers.
