The Ontario government has revealed plans to revoke current exclusivity rights, potentially paving the way for more casinos in the Niagara Region. Premier Doug Ford introduced the Destination Niagara initiative last December, aiming to attract double the number of tourists to the area by introducing new casinos, a theme park, an expanded airport, and other attractions.
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. has struck a deal with MGE Niagara Entertainment Inc., allowing for additional casino operators in the region. While MGE will relinquish its exclusivity rights, it will retain control over Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara. OLG is expected to initiate a procurement process later this year to seek out potential new casino operators.
Wayne Gates, the NDP member of provincial parliament for Niagara Falls, has highlighted significant local opposition to one aspect of Ford’s Destination Niagara plan – the proposal to install a second ferris wheel near the falls. Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati has expressed agreement, stating that the idea of a second ferris wheel in Queen Victoria Park is widely unpopular and unlikely to gain support.
