“Tea Leave Initiative Promotes Mental Health Breaks”

Must read

A significant shift in workplace habits is observed as more than 33% of the UK workforce now opt to stay glued to their desks without taking a traditional tea break. Notably, half of the individuals surveyed admit that the sole reason for leaving their workstation is to take a bathroom break, as revealed by a study conducted by Three UK, a mobile provider.

Despite the prevalence of these practices, a considerable number of individuals believe that such behaviors have a negative impact on mental health. In fact, 76% of respondents express that breaks play a vital role in enhancing their overall well-being while at work.

In response to this trend and in support of Brew Monday, Three is advocating for a new initiative called ‘Tea Leave.’ This initiative encourages employers to promote a culture where employees are urged to take a 30-minute break without any scrutiny.

Brew Monday, an annual campaign supported by Three’s charity partner Samaritans, aims to counteract the concept of ‘Blue Monday’ by encouraging people to engage in conversations over a cup of tea, either in person or over the phone.

Renowned mental health advocate Dr. Alex George emphasizes the importance of taking breaks from work to support mental well-being. He has teamed up with Three and Samaritans to launch the Tea Leave campaign, highlighting the significance of meaningful interactions over a cup of tea or a walk outside in combatting feelings of isolation.

The Tea Leave initiative stemmed from recent research indicating that 70% of UK office workers believe that stepping out for a simple tea or coffee break can lead to the most meaningful conversations with colleagues. These connections are deemed crucial for mental well-being at work, surpassing the impact of designated well-being spaces or team-building activities.

When it comes to utilizing breaks, 44% of respondents plan to spend more time outdoors, while one-fifth intend to catch up on texts from friends and family. Additionally, 18% express a desire to make quick video calls to loved ones during their breaks.

A representative from Samaritans emphasizes the importance of human connection and gestures like the Tea Leave initiative in fostering a supportive environment. Nicki Lyons, Chief Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Officer at VodafoneThree, underscores the company’s commitment to promoting positive well-being in the workplace, especially during challenging times.

Three, having raised over £1 million for Samaritans, is offering an exclusive perk to its Three+ members this week. From January 19 to 25, Three+ members can enjoy two £1 hot drinks at various cafes and coffee shops across the UK.
