“Urgent Call for Fairer Sick Pay System in the UK”

Must read

At the age of 23, I received a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer, which came as a significant shock. Treatment required five weeks of radiotherapy at a specialized center for young patients, necessitating a 40-mile daily commute to the hospital.

The treatment’s taxing side effects, coupled with the time spent commuting, parking, and waiting at the hospital each day, made it unfeasible for me to continue working at my previous job with a major supermarket chain, leading to an extended leave of absence.

While facing this challenging period, I realized the inadequacy of the sick pay benefits provided by my employer and the statutory sick pay (SSP) system in the UK. Despite having only two weeks of paid sick leave from my employer, transitioning to SSP meant receiving less than £3 per hour during my treatment.

Fortunately, I received tremendous support from my partner, family, friends, and organizations like Young Lives vs Cancer. However, many individuals I have encountered through the Safe Sick Pay campaign have endured even more dire situations, some receiving no sick pay at all while undergoing treatment.

Insufficient sick pay not only impacts those battling serious illnesses like cancer but also affects individuals requiring time off for minor ailments. For workers on shifts, the delay in receiving pay from the fourth day of illness can result in a significant loss of income.

The opposition from some members of the House of Lords to the implementation of day one sick pay rights through the Employment Rights Bill is concerning. Denying day one sick pay rights and assistance to the lowest earners is unjust. These reforms simply ask employers to provide the minimum support necessary for individuals to recuperate and return to work safely.

While most of Europe and other parts of the world already guarantee such support, it is crucial for the House of Lords to pass the bill and initiate essential steps towards a fairer sick pay system for millions of workers. Jointly with other affected employees, I urge the House of Lords to make the right decision and support the bill to improve sick pay provisions.
