A passenger on an easyJet flight shared her experience of challenging the airline’s fine for an oversized bag. Louise Machin was surprised when she was charged €58 (£51) upon returning from Chania Airport in Crete, despite checking her suitcase’s size beforehand. After proving the bag met easyJet’s requirements, the airline refunded her.
Ms. Machin, a freelance film and TV sales director, is not the only one facing unjust fines for oversized cabin bags. According to consumer group Which?, some airports have faulty bag sizers, leading to confusion among travelers. While passengers are accustomed to verifying bag dimensions, discrepancies in airport sizers can cause issues.
During a trip to Crete, Ms. Machin faced scrutiny over her bag’s size at the check-in counter. Despite her bag fitting the sizer at London Gatwick, she was forced to pay at Chania Airport. After contacting the bag manufacturer, Cabin Max, and receiving confirmation of compliance, easyJet refunded her.
Which? highlighted similar incidents with other airlines penalizing passengers for minor deviations in bag sizes. Airlines like Ryanair incentivize staff to enforce size restrictions strictly. The advice for travelers wrongly fined is to appeal if confident in their bag’s compliance.
Despite easyJet claiming no issues with Chania Airport’s sizers, they refunded Ms. Machin and apologized for the inconvenience. The airline ensures standardized sizers across all airports and addresses sizer damages promptly. Feedback from customers is reviewed on a case-by-case basis, emphasizing customer satisfaction.
