The trend of streaming continues to surge as more people opt for broadband services to enjoy content directly on their TVs without the need for traditional aerial or dish setups. Streaming offers convenience, especially for placing TVs in areas without aerial connections.
However, a common issue with internet streaming, particularly during live sports broadcasts, is latency. This delay can cause streamed content to lag behind over-the-air signals, leading to situations where viewers may not see important moments in real-time.
Sky has addressed this latency challenge with its latest streaming devices, such as Sky Glass and Sky Stream, enabling access to sports content that is only a few seconds delayed from the live action. Following suit, the BBC has now introduced a similar update to reduce latency for viewers using Fire TV Sticks, Sony TVs, and BT set-top boxes, including Sky Glass.
Melissa Darragh, Senior R&D Engineer at the BBC, explained that they are expanding their low latency streaming trial on BBC iPlayer beta to more supported devices and extending the testing period to gather insights on streaming performance in real-world settings.
The BBC aims to enhance user experiences during live events like breaking news, sports, and concerts with this extension. They encourage more households to participate in the trial to further refine their streaming capabilities.
Viewers on supported devices can engage in the trial by watching BBC Two live on iPlayer Beta from 8 am to 10 pm BST with reduced delay. If any issues arise, users can switch back to conventional streaming by opting out of the beta version through the Settings menu.
Here are some compatible devices for the low latency streaming trial:
– Fire TV Edition 4K 2022
– Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen)
– BT TV Box Pro
– Sky Glass Gen 1
– Selected Bush and Toshiba TVs
– Sony TVs from XR-A95K and XR-X90K series
