Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy reaffirmed the UK’s firm stance on Greenland, dismissing any potential negotiations in response to Donald Trump’s recent warnings. The US President threatened to impose 10% tariffs on countries, including the UK, for opposing his territorial ambitions. Nandy emphasized the UK’s opposition while avoiding escalating tensions with the US.
Keir Starmer condemned Trump’s tariff decision as “completely wrong,” a sentiment echoed by Nandy on the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg program. She emphasized that the UK believes the tariff discussions are unproductive and counterproductive. The UK firmly maintains that Greenland’s future should be determined by the people of Greenland and Denmark.
Recent developments saw the UK deploying a military officer to Greenland following Denmark’s increased military presence in the Arctic. Trump’s ultimatum included imposing tariffs on eight countries, including the UK, if they continued to resist his Greenland acquisition agenda. He threatened to raise tariffs to 25% by June 1 if a deal was not reached.
Nandy emphasized the importance of the UK’s relationship with the US and reiterated the non-negotiable stance on Greenland. While Trump’s position differs, cooperation remains crucial to avoid escalating tensions. French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also rejected intimidation tactics, with EU ambassadors convening for urgent discussions.
The EU’s foreign policy chief warned that tariffs could harm both the US and EU economies while benefiting China and Russia. Former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas highlighted how divisions among allies could play into the hands of China and Russia.
