U.S. Vice-President JD Vance shared insights on the recent trade agreement with Canada during a fundraising gathering on Wednesday. He mentioned that Prime Minister Mark Carney attempted to project strength against U.S. President Donald Trump, while acknowledging Conservative MP Jamil Jivani for supporting Canada.
At the private event, Vance described Carney as a “very amiable person” with whom he has a good rapport. However, he humorously remarked that Carney boasts about “out-toughing Donald Trump,” portraying it as a Canadian victory despite concessions on various issues.
Highlighting the behind-the-scenes dynamics, Vance praised Jivani, a Canadian MP, for effectively advocating on behalf of Canada. He also downplayed the significance of Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in the trade negotiations, labeling him as a negligible figure.
The White House and the vice-president’s office had not responded to queries regarding the matter. Following intense bilateral talks, Trump announced a three-day postponement of new tariffs on Canadian goods, facilitated by a phone call with Carney.
Emphasizing the positive outcome, Trump expressed satisfaction with the deal, which reportedly involves reductions in tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles by the United States. The specifics of Canada’s commitments remain undisclosed, with Trump indicating a tariff reduction to zero for American farmers.
Vance underscored Trump’s goal of influencing Canada’s behavior through the negotiations, noting a shift in alignment with Trump’s approach. The vice-president emphasized his active role in the negotiations, attributing it partly to his relationship with Jivani.
Acknowledging Jivani’s discreet involvement in the talks, Vance commended his advocacy on mutually beneficial issues such as energy and automotive tariffs. The longstanding friendship between Vance and Jivani, dating back to their time at Yale, has contributed to their collaboration in this context.
Regarding Jivani’s engagements in Washington, including meetings with key officials, Poilievre’s criticism of Jivani’s approach has sparked internal disagreements within the Canadian Conservative Party. Poilievre’s stance on tariff-free agreements contrasts with Jivani’s efforts, leading to public disagreements within the party.
Jivani’s proactive engagement with the Trump administration has stirred controversy within the party, as Poilievre advocates for a different approach in negotiating trade deals with the U.S. Jivani’s dedication to fostering Canada-U.S. trade relations has underscored the complexities within the Canadian political landscape.
