Millions of Gmail users will soon have the option to change their email address to something entirely new. Google had previously hinted at this upcoming feature, and it is now being gradually rolled out globally. In an update on its Gmail blog page, Google confirmed that users can switch their Google Account email from an address ending in gmail.com to a new address with the same domain.
This new capability could be a valuable upgrade for users who wish to alter their username or have experienced changes in their circumstances. However, Google has emphasized that the ability to change email addresses is currently being slowly introduced to all users, and it may not be immediately available to everyone.
The new system will allow both the old and new email addresses to function simultaneously, ensuring that any emails sent to the current Gmail address will be automatically forwarded to the new one. Google assures users that their account data, including photos, messages, and emails linked to the original address, will remain unaffected.
To determine if you can switch to a new Gmail address without losing your emails, follow these steps:
– Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer and sign in if required.
– Click on Personal info in the top-left corner.
– Select Email, then Google Account email.
– Click on Change Google Account email under “Google Account email.”
– If the option is not visible, it may not be accessible to you yet.
– Enter the new username you desire, ensuring it is unique and not previously used or deleted.
– Click on Change email, then confirm by selecting Yes, change email.
– Follow the on-screen instructions.
Once the process is completed, your new Gmail address will become your primary account email, while the old address will be retained as an alternate email.
