Recently, Regina-based Max Power Mining commenced drilling its third well in the Lawson Complex, located in southern Saskatchewan. The company envisions establishing the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system, introducing a new primary energy source.

Chad Levesque, the president and director of the company, emphasized the importance of hydrogen as a vital component in various industrial processes such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning to cleaner energy sources. He highlighted the significance of sourcing hydrogen in a more environmentally friendly manner, underscoring the potential of natural hydrogen deposits.

Hydrogen, a versatile gas that can serve as a fuel or be utilized in fuel cells for electricity generation, is recognized for producing water as its only byproduct without emitting greenhouse gases directly. This attribute has positioned hydrogen as a promising energy source for sectors like transportation and steelmaking, which are challenging to decarbonize using conventional methods.

While most commercially available hydrogen is currently derived from fossil fuels, resulting in significant carbon emissions, green hydrogen produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources offers a cleaner alternative. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a unique opportunity as it can be extracted from underground deposits with relatively low greenhouse gas emissions, leveraging existing extraction techniques used for natural gas and helium.

The geological characteristics of locations like the Lawson Complex in Saskatchewan enable the accumulation of hydrogen in porous sandstone formations, sealed beneath layers of shale and salt. Despite the potential benefits of natural hydrogen, challenges such as extraction complexities and limited productivity of existing deposits need to be addressed to assess its commercial viability fully.
